All the Garbage of the World, Unite!

A reading by Seattle poets Don Mee Choi and Melanie Noel.

A celebration of Don Mee Choi’s new translation of Kim Hyesoon’s All the Garbage of the World, Unite! (from Action Books).

Don Mee Choi is the author of The Morning News is Exciting (Action Books, 2010) and has recently received a Whiting Writer’s Award. Her newly published translation is South Korean poet Kim Hyesoon’s All the Garbage of the World, Unite! (Action Books, 2011). Her previous translations include When the Plug Gets Unplugged (Tinfish, 2005), Anxiety of Words (Zephyr, 2006), and Mommy Must Be a Fountain of Feathers (Action Books, 2008).

Melanie Noel is the author of Monarchs (forthcoming from Stockport Flats Press). Her poems have appeared in Fine Madness, Filter, Weekday, and on the audiomagazine Weird Deer. She’s also written poems for short films and installations, and from 2006-2008 co-curated APOSTROPHE, a dance, music, and poetry series, with Gust Burns, Michele Steinwald, and Beth Graczyk.

Andy Pressman is co-founder of the design studio Rumors (www.rumors-studio.com). Notable work includes the art direction of Bidoun magazine, book and web design for Verso Books, and exhibition design for the Canadian Centre for Architecture. He teaches at Parsons School of Art and the Cooper Union and currently lives in Portland.

Jayme Yen is the graphic designer for the Henry Art Gallery. She has been a design fellow at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, a design researcher in the Netherlands, and has worked for clients such as McSweeney’s and HarperCollins. She can be found online at her rarely updated website www.jaymeyen.com.

Friday October 28th. At the Hedreen Gallery, 901 12th Avenue, Seattle. Noon to one.

Nadine Antoinette Maestas is a poet’s poet and believes that the empire of the sentence is an extremely oppressive totalitarian regime. Mountain biking in dangerous and remote places, she lives in Seattle, teaches at the University of Washington and North Seattle Community College, and facilitates poetry workshops at SPLAB. Co-author with Karen Weiser of Beneath the Bright Discus (Potes & Poets Press, 2000), Nadine is writing a dissertation on postmodern American anthropoetics.

M Thompson (www.m-thompson.net) has crisscrossed the U.S. playing music for people, seen the south of France as an organic farmer, and been a bicycling bag artist living in Berlin. His fiction, book reviews, and interviews have appeared in places like Unsaid, Everyday Genius, Used Furniture Review, The Collagist, elimae, and Spork,among others. In 2011, a collection of his work was shortlisted for NMP/DIAGRAM’s Chapbook Prize.

John Cage and Sun Ra Walk Into a Bar

I wrote this for the Silence & Communication event at Seattle’s Sole Repair on September 1st, 2011, in which twenty two writers performed work around the work of John Cage.

JOHN CAGE AND SUN RA WALK INTO A BAR

John Cage and Sun Ra walk into a bar. Sun Ra is wearing headphones. Someone asks Sun Ra what he’s listening to. Sun Ra hands over the headphones. And nothing’s playing.

John Cage and Sun Ra walk into a bar. Someone asks Sun Ra where he’s from. Where are you from? Saturn. Come on, where are you from? Saturn. Okay, I’ll ask you one more time, where are you from? Okay, okay, Jupiter.

John Cage and Sun Ra walk into a bar. The outerspace employment agency. Someone asks Sun Ra about a job. What’ve you been doing lately? Nothing. How long have you been doing nothing? A long time. You must be an expert at it. I’ll hire you. To do what? Nothing. How much do I get paid? Nothing.
